Biomass project in Manatee county approved

According to officials, the Florida Public Service Commission gave a green light to a renewable energy contract for a $185 million biomass project to be built in Manatee County.

The Florida Biomass Energy project will diversify Progress Energy power generation and will help insulate customers from costs associated with fossil fuel fluctuation.

Located in Bradenton, the company will burn waste wood and specially grown vegetation to generate up to 60 megawatts of electricity, according to PSC. Construction is likely to begin next year.
